Man sentenced in 2020 Riverside Park rape gets more prison time in second rape case
A 31-year-old Wichita man serving a life sentence for a May 2020 kidnapping and rape has been sentenced to more prison time for an earlier rape case.
Gerardo Aguero-Hernandez was sentenced Friday to 1,367 months, or roughly 114 years, in prison for “crimes of kidnapping, and rape, following a July 2018 attack,” DA spokesperson Dan Dillon said Monday.
A 50-year-old woman had been walking around downtown Wichita when Aguero-Hernandez offered her a ride to her friend’s house, the DA’s office said.
The woman got in Aguero-Hernandez’ car, but he did not take her to her friend’s house. Instead, he locked her in, threatened and then sexually assaulted her.
He eventually let her go and she fled to her friend’s house, where she called the police. A jury found Aguero-Hernandez guilty last June, Dillon said.
Aguero-Hernandez had been convicted in September 2023 for kidnapping, choking and raping a 12-year-old girl in Riverside Park. The girl was a foster care runaway, The Eagle reported.
He was given a sentence of life without parole for 25 years plus an additional 15 years in that case. The sentences were to be served back to back, the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office previously said.
In that case, authorities have said, he lured a 12-year-old girl into his vehicle, offering her a ride and cocaine, as she was walking at night from a foster home on North Broadway to her grandfather’s house on South Seneca on May 22, 2020.
After the incident, the girl ran to the water treatment plant, at 1815 W. Pine, where she was seen on camera by an employee. Police were able to track Aguero-Hernandez’ car entering Riverside Park and leaving Sims Park.
The latest sentence will run consecutively with the 2023 sentences, meaning Aguero-Hernandez is now sentenced to roughly 153 years in prison.
