A woman was booked into jail after being accused of shooting her 16-year-old son Wednesday at a southeast Wichita apartment, an official said.

The teen was taken to the hospital, where he remains in extremely critical condition, Wichita police spokesperson Aaron Moses said.

Officers responded at 8:12 a.m. to the Claremont Apartment Homes in the 9100 block of East Harry after the mother, 46, called 911 to report that she had shot her son, Moses added.

The woman and her son live in the apartment and were the only ones there when the shooting happened. First responders found the teen suffering from a single gunshot wound.

The mother was detained and then booked into the Sedgwick County Jail on suspicion of aggravated battery, aggravated assault and domestic violence. Police did not say what prompted the shooting, but said they found a gun at the scene.

“Our investigators are continuing to gather information to determine all of the events that led to the shooting,” Moses said in an email.

Detectives learned of a previous incident in March where the woman threatened an ex-husband and his current girlfriend with a gun. That incident was not reported, according to Moses.
