Police identify woman, man who died in apparent murder-suicide in southeast Wichita
Police have identified a man and woman who died Sunday in a shooting at a home in southeast Wichita. The deaths are being investigated as a murder-suicide.
Wichita police spokesperson Andrew Ford named 26-year-old Jan Tanui and 21-year-old Hannah Tanui and said they had been married but were divorced.
Both were from Wichita.
Patrol East officers were flagged down at 3:40 a.m. by someone who reported a man had broken into their home in the 800 block of South Edgemoor.
That person who flagged down officers lived in the home with the 21-year-old victim and the two were in a relationship, Ford said Monday in an email.
The suspect broke into the home armed with a handgun and made suicidal statements, police have said.
Officers tried calling for the man with no success. SWAT and crisis negotiators were called and were not able to talk to the man inside.
SWAT officers entered the home and found the man and woman dead from gunshot wounds, police said.
“The Wichita Police Department wishes to convey our sympathies and deepest condolences to the families of all those impacted,” the release said. “Our victim assistance advocates will work with the families to provide support and resources needed at this difficult time.”
