A 33-year-old Wichita man convicted in a fatal shooting in the parking lot of an east-side nightclub last year has been sentenced to 35 years, 7 months in prison, according to a news release from the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office.

Terrence J. Johnson shot 23-year-old Jaylon Pete of Wichita on Oct. 29, 2023. Prosecutors say the men were talking to one another by the doors of the Onyx Club, 10001 E. Kellogg, near Webb, “when Johnson pulled a pistol and shot Pete twice,” causing fatal wounds. The shooting happened at about 12:25 a.m.

Pete was pronounced dead at Wesley Medical Center an hour later.

Prosecutors said in court filings that Johnson shot Pete “after no apparent confrontation.” Johnson left the club after getting into a fight inside, retrieved a gun from a vehicle and headed toward the exit doors, where he fired at Pete, the filings say.

In a hand-written motion for self-defense immunity, Johnson claimed Pete had threatened to harm him over an assault earlier that night.

“Johnson later fired randomly in the parking lot of the club and wounded two other men,” the DA’s news release says. Both of those victims survived. One was shot in his right forearm. The other was shot in his right thigh, according to a probable cause affidavit released in the case.

Johnson pleaded guilty on July 26 to amended counts of second-degree intentional murder and attempted first-degree murder. He was originally charged with first-degree premeditated murder and other crimes.

He was sentenced Friday by Sedgwick County District Judge Sean Hatfield, the DA’s Office said.
