Man wanted after Texas police chief shot multiple times may be hiding in Wichita area
A man wanted by Texas and federal authorities after being accused of shooting a police chief Thursday in northern Texas may be hiding in Wichita.
Seth Michael Altman, 33, is currently listed on the Texas 10 most wanted fugitives list. Texas Gov. Gregg Abbott, through the Texas Department of Public Safety, announced a $10,000 reward for information leading to his arrest.
The FBI is also offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to his arrest.
Altman may be in the Wichita metro area, a Monday social media post from Crime Stoppers of Wichita and Sedgwick County said.
He is 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighs 220 pounds. He has blue eyes, red or auburn hair and wears glasses that are possibly missing one of the lenses, Texas authorities said.
Altman is wanted for attempted capital murder of a peace officer in connection with the shooting of Memphis, Texas, Police Chief Rex Plant, according to the Texas DPS.
Plant and another officer went to a house in Memphis at 11 p.m. on Thursday to arrest Altman on burglary charges, when Altman allegedly pulled a handgun, fired multiple rounds that struck Plant and then fled on foot, the Texas DPS said.
Plant was airlifted to a Lubbock hospital. His current condition is unknown.
Altman’s criminal history includes assault, burglary of vehicles, evading arrest and criminal trespass, the Texas DPS said.
He is considered armed and dangerous and should not be approached. Anyone who may know his whereabouts in the Wichita area is encouraged to call Wichita-Sedgwick Crime Stoppers at 316-267-2111.
Memphis, Texas, is a city of just over 2,000 and is five-hour drive southwest of Wichita.
