Man released from hospital and jailed after shooting outside Wichita elementary school
The suspect who allegedly shot his wife and then went onto the campus of a south Wichita school before pointing his gun at a deputy and being shot is now in jail after being released from the hospital, according to an arrest report released Thursday morning.
The shootings happened Monday morning while the couple, and other people, were dropping their children off at school.
The 30-year-old woman who he allegedly shot multiple times was still hospitalized Thursday morning, police said. She is expected to survive.
The 46-year-old Wichita man was booked into Sedgwick County Jail at 4:14 p.m. Wednesday on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder, aggravated battery, aggravated assault, aggravated kidnapping, aggravated assault on an officer, criminal use of a weapon, domestic battery, criminal restraint and interference with an officer.
He lives just a mile from the school, records show.
Officers were called at 9:15 a.m. Monday about a shooting outside Cessna Elementary School, 2101 W. 45th St. South. Classes start at 9 a.m.
What police say happened during shooting at Wichita school
Here is what officers say happened:
The couple used a Lyft driver to take their children to school. An argument started on Clarence Avenue, which is the street directly east of the school, before the man allegedly shot his wife multiple times in the street.
The couple’s children were already inside the school.
The woman ran toward the school. He allegedly chased her.
A school employee saw the armed man approaching and locked the doors of the school. Video released in the case shows the wounded woman and armed man were just feet away when this happened.
A deputy heard the report of the shooting and arrived within minutes. The suspect allegedly pointed a gun at the deputy while saying that the officer would kill him.
He then allegedly laid on top of his wife and pointed the gun at her head.
The deputy saw an opportunity and fired two shots, striking the man at least once, but he allegedly would not let go of the woman.
It took the deputy and two Wichita officers to disarm the suspect and take him into in custody.
