Man arrested at McDonald’s a week after body was found in trunk of car in Wichita field
A 23-year-old Wichita man has been arrested in an Aug. 21 killing in which the victim was found wrapped in bloody bedding in the trunk of a car in a grassy field in west Wichita, police Capt. Aaron Moses said Wednesday.
The man was arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder at McDonald’s at 1811 N. Hillside, which is near 17th, Moses said. He was booked into jail at 5:07 p.m. Tuesday.
His arrest is in the death of 39-year-old Kyce A. Barnes, who had gunshot wounds to his upper and lower body. Police were called at 7:11 a.m. Aug. 21 about an abandoned vehicle in the 8200 block of West Irving.
The car, a white Mercedes, had a temporary plate on it.
Police said the killing happened nearby at Delux Inn, 8401 W. Kellogg, before the body was moved about a quarter-mile away.
“When an act of violence like this occurs in our City, the Wichita Police Department continues to show our commitment by mobilizing forces together to quickly identify and apprehend those responsible,” chief Joe Sullivan said in the news release.
Police have not said what the killing was over.
Barnes “leaves behind a beautiful, bright daughter and many loving family members,” according to a GoFundMe set up to help with funeral expenses. The fundraiser can be found at shorturl.at/zvcjo.
This is the city’s 27th homicide of the year, according to reports from police. There were 32 at this time last year.
