No charges will be filed in an investigation where the Valley Center High School varsity baseball team was accused of killing a chicken in April on school grounds, the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office said Tuesday.

“After a full review of the investigation, the determination has been made that insufficient evidence was uncovered to establish the commission of a chargeable crime under Kansas law,” Sedgwick County DA Marc Bennett said.

The Valley Center School District did not comment on Tuesday’s decision.

“We have no further comments regarding this matter,” USD 262 spokesperson Amy Pavlacka said in an email.

The decision stems from an incident where school officials were alerted on April 22 to a report of possible animal cruelty involving the Hornet varsity baseball team and its coaching staff on USD 262 property, The Eagle reported.

The incident was reported to the school’s resource officer by a school employee.

The Valley Center police chief later said that the team was being accused of killing a chicken on school grounds. The district suspended the team’s season amid the law enforcement investigation.
