Multiple guns, ammunition found after Old Town standoff; suspect arrested in other cases
Multiple guns and ammunition were found after a 41-year-old Wichita man surrendered following an hours-long standoff in Old Town on Wednesday.
The incident led to a SWAT response with multiple armored vehicles and snipers setting up on at least one roof and in an office building, Wichita police Capt. Aaron Moses said Thursday. Police blocked off Douglas between Mead and St. Francis during the standoff.
After coming out of his apartment in the 600 block of East Douglas around 4:45 p.m. Wednesday, the 41-year-old was also arrested for the first time in connection to two cases in June involving discharging a firearm, including one from earlier that morning and one from June 1.
Wednesday’s police response came after a domestic violence with a gun call around 12:45 p.m. It involved an argument with his 24-year-old girlfriend, who also lives at the apartment, police said.
The man was also arrested in February, and has a pending case in municipal court for it, in a domestic violence case early in the morning of Jan. 1 at the apartment and involving the same woman.
The victim reported the suspect “punching her in the face causing her to lose consciousness and then pointing a handgun at her (causing) her to feel afraid,” according to a Jan. 1 police report.
In Wednesday’s incident police said she was able to leave the apartment and was OK.
The suspect remained jailed Thursday.
He was arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated battery and criminal threat tied to Wednesday’s domestic violence case and standoff. He was also arrested for the first time in connection to two other cases involving discharging a firearm:
One of those was reported to police around noon on June 1 in the 600 block of East Douglas where the standoff occurred. It was reported he fired one shot, Moses said.
“Information related to that incident was provided yesterday that identified the male as the suspect in that case,” Moses said.
The other reportedly happened Wednesday morning in the in the 1000 block of South Oliver, which is near Lincoln.
“Again, this is part of the overall investigation into the incident yesterday,” Moses said.
