A man was shot and killed Tuesday by police in Haysville who were responding to check on someone who was “reported as possibly suicidal,” Haysville Police Department chief Jeff Whitfield said.

Officers were dispatched shortly before 5 p.m. to a home in the 200 block of North Lamar. Officers did not find the man there.

Police later found the man sitting in his vehicle in a parking lot after obtaining the vehicle’s plate number and description, Whitfield said in a news release.

Officers talked to the man when they noticed that he had a handgun sitting on his lap. The man refused to surrender the gun and was shot by officers, Whitfield said.

The man reached for the gun where then officers fired their weapons, Whitfield told media.

The man died at the scene. No one else was injured. The man’s name has not been released and police have not responded to a request for additional information.

The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the shooting and will present its findings to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office.
