Wichita man arrested, accused of shooting at random vehicles on and near I-235
A 20-year-old Wichita man was arrested early Friday morning after he wrecked his vehicle and then walked onto I-235, where he is accused of shooting a gun at random vehicles, police Lt. Aaron Moses said.
He also is suspected of shooting at one vehicle on a different road nearby.
No one was injured.
Two drivers — an 18-year-old man with a 15-year-old boy in the vehicle and a 56-year-old woman — were shot at, but not hit, on I-235. A 28-year-old man’s vehicle was shot at and hit on a road near the highway, Moses said.
Kamil Khalid Lweno was booked into Sedgwick County Jail on suspicion of three counts of aggravated assault, three counts of criminal discharge of a weapon into an occupied vehicle and one count of possession of marijuana in connection to the shooting.
Police were called at 1:42 a.m. Friday about a person with a weapon near I-235 and Central.
“Callers reported gunshots and observed a male walking along the median of the highway discharging a firearm,” Moses said in a news release.
Callers reported multiple shots being fired at their vehicle.
At the same time, police were called to an abandoned vehicle that had crashed in the 1900 block of North Westdale. Police found a Jeep Grand Cherokee that was registered to Lweno, according to police and records.
Police shut down at least part of the highway as they moved in on the suspect.
The man did not resist being arrested. Jail records show he was arrested near 25th Street North and I-235.
“Law enforcement officers recovered a (handgun) and multiple spent cartridge casings,” Moses said. “We’re still evaluating the circumstances to understand what led to this incident.”
