A man was fatally shot by a Sedgwick Count Sheriff’s Office deputy after he ran from officers into a bystander’s home and threatened police with a knife, Wichita police spokesperson Andrew Ford said.

The man was shot just after 3 a.m. Thursday in the 2400 block of East Harry. He was taken to the hospital and later died.

The incident started around 10:24 p.m. Wednesday in the 100 block of South Ridge Road after a person told police their roommate stole their vehicle at knifepoint, Ford said.

The stolen vehicle was later spotted around Bayley and Schweiter and a vehicle pursuit ensued. That pursuit ended less than a mile away near Harry and Green.

“The suspect then barricaded himself in a residence with an innocent individual after threatening violence to the police with a knife,” Ford said in a news release.

That person inside the home was not injured, according to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

The SWAT team, which used deputies and Wichita police officers, and negotiators were called to the standoff.

From details released so far, it’s unclear exactly how the shooting happened.

The KBI is doing the investigation.
