A 22-year-old resident of the Sedgwick County Department of Corrections Adult Residential and Work Release Programs facility died there Monday, a county official said.

“The client, a 22-year-old male, was court-assigned to Adult Residential on Dec. 20 after convictions for burglary and theft. The cause of death at this time is undetermined,” Sedgwick County spokesperson Nicole Gibbs said.

At about 5:30 a.m., a corrections officer doing dorm checks at the facility was alerted by a resident that the man was “not doing well,” according to a county news release.

The corrections officer found the man unresponsive. Corrections staff performed life-saving measures and called 911. Sedgwick County Emergency Medical Services and fire medics arrived and continued the efforts, but the man was declared dead by EMS, Gibbs said.

The county did not identify the man. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is looking into the death and is being assisted by the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office Investigations Division and District Coroner’s Office.
