Man, 35, charged with sexual assault of 100-year-old woman
CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story misstated details of the offense. Wichita police said the woman was assaulted sometime between 9 p.m. Sept. 29 and 7:30 a.m. Sept. 30. They did not say how long an intruder or intruders were in the woman’s home or give the time she awakened and discovered them.
Prosecutors on Wednesday charged a 35-year-old man with sexually assaulting a 100-year-old woman during a break-in at her south Wichita home late last month.
Kasey Nesbitt faces one count of rape and one count of aggravated burglary. Dressed in orange jail garb, he made his first appearance in court Wednesday afternoon via a video link broadcast from the Sedgwick County Jail, where he's been in custody since Oct. 6 in an unrelated case.
Police have said the woman, who lives alone, was awakened in the middle of the night by intruders who forced open a back door of her home in the 800 block of South Crestway sometime after 9 p.m. Sept. 29.
She walked to a neighbor's home the next morning to report the burglary and assault. A medical exam confirmed she had been raped, police have said.
During his court hearing Wednesday, Nesbitt rested his forearms on a podium as District Judge Joe Kisner advised him of the charges and set his bond at $250,000.
Asked by the judge if he understood the district attorney's allegations, Nesbitt said yes.
At the close of the a hearing the 35-year-old told Kisner, "Thank you very much."
He will be represented by a court-appointed lawyer.
Nesbitt was already in custody in a separate burglary case when he was arrested last Thursday in connection with the woman's rape. Kansas Department of Corrections records show he has been in and out of prison since 2000, mostly on burglary and theft convictions.
He was released in January 2013.
