A Wichita man has been ordered to serve more than 68 years in prison for raping a teenage girl he met on Facebook in 2015.

Sedgwick County District Judge Tyler Roush handed down the 818-month sentence to 31-year-old Donquez L. Jones on Sept. 28, according to court records and a news release from the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office. A jury convicted him on Aug. 3 of rape, criminal sodomy, aggravated criminal sodomy and aggravated indecent liberties with a child, court records say.

The DA’s Office said Jones sexually assaulted the 15-year-old girl after meeting her on social media. She was sexually assaulted in March of 2015, the DA’s Office said. Jones was 23 at the time, court records say.

Jones’ attorney had asked the judge in a written motion to let him serve a probation sentence, or alternatively no more than 245 months in prison, noting that the girl “willingly accepted” Jones’ friendship request on Facebook and exchanged “sexually explicit text message” and photos with him. The lawyer also wrote that Jones hadn’t committed a felony for “over a decade” prior.

The judge denied the request, citing a lack of “substantial and compelling reasons” to depart from sentencing guidelines, court records show.

Jones plans to appeal.
