Hutchinson police capture man wanted on several warrants

A Hutchinson man wanted by police on several outstanding warrants was taken into custody Sunday shortly after someone reported seeing the man at a local Dillons store.

When police arrived at the Dillons parking lot at 725 E. Fourth, officers pulled behind a car driven by Sonny J. Bray, who fled in the car, according to Sgt. R.W. Rowe in a release issued Sunday by the Hutchinson Police Department.

While officers were pursing Bray, he allegedly threw a sawed-off shotgun out of his car window. In the 500 block of East Third, Bray’s car struck a tractor-trailer truck. His vehicle then went south on Plum, and at the intersection of East Avenue B and South Plum, he struck a curb and stop sign, disabling his car. Police later captured Bray as he ran from the scene on foot.

Bray was arrested on suspicion of criminal possession of a firearm by a felon, criminal use of a weapon, having shotgun barrel of less than 18 inches, felony interference with a law enforcement officer, felony flee and elude, driving while suspended, two counts of leaving the scene of an accident involving unattended property, a Reno County District Court Warrant for failure to appear, a Reno County District Court Warrant for aggravated battery, a Hutchinson Municipal Court Warrant for failure to appear and a parole violation through the Kansas Department of Corrections.

The Reno County Sheriff’s Office and the Kansas Highway Patrol assisted in the investigation.
