A former Wichita Airport Authority lieutenant who used his position to look up a family member’s criminal case and contact the detective assigned to it has had his license revoked, according to documents released this week.

Matthew Hoyt, who worked as a WAA officer and firefighter between Feb. 2010 and May 2023, could not be reached for comment.

In November, he pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor computer crimes. He was given 12 months of probation. He had originally been charged with two felonies in June 2022.

The document from the Kansas Commission on Peace Officers’ Standards and Training (KSCPOST), which oversees officer certifications, provides additional details into what happened after the family member had been involved in a criminal case.

“(Hoyt) accessed the case through a law enforcement agency computer and records management system,” the document says, adding he “then contacted the assigned detective regarding his (family member). When interviewed, (Hoyt’s family member) indicated that (he) had accessed her case and discussed aspects of it” with them.

Additionally, the document says, he accessed and printed the case and another case.

“(Hoyt) also searched his (family member’s) name, which contained both the case numbers he printed,” the document says. “(Hoyt) did not have any law enforcement need to look up ... the cases, therefore he exceeded his authorization to access the records.”
