Wichita police responded to the area of Zoo Boulevard and Westdale on Thursday morning after shots were fired.

A 30-year-old man is in “extremely critical condition” after a self-inflicted gunshot wound following a hit-and-run accident and firing shots at an officer Thursday morning in west Wichita, Lt. Aaron Moses said.

The officer had said he was shot at seven or eight times, according to Sedgwick County Emergency Communication scanner traffic. Moses said the officer didn’t return fire.

Officers were first called to a hit and run at around 10:05 a.m. at 13th and West, he said. A witness followed the suspect vehicle before he pointed a gun at the witness, Moses said.

Police arrived and found who they thought was the suspect, who then fired at the officer, Moses said, adding the shooting happened along Westdale. A foot chase ensued.

Police set up a perimeter to contain the suspect. Around 10:24 a.m., an officer said they saw a male running on 13th toward Zoo with a gun to his head. The man later shot himself, police said. It was reported that he shot himself in the head, according to an emergency communications supervisor.

Moses said he thought the hit and run accident involved two vehicles. He was unsure if there were injuries but said if there were, they were minor.
