Wichita parolee arrested in road rage incident where man on moped was shot, police say
A 22-year-old Wichita man on parole has been arrested after a road rage incident in which a man on a moped was shot, according to records and Wichita police spokesperson Juan Rebolledo.
Kaeden Levi Murphy was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of aggravated battery, criminal possession of a weapon by a felon and a parole violation. Murphy was last released from prison in May, according to Kansas Department of Corrections records.
Police used the Flock Safety license plate reader surveillance system to find Murphy and the blue pickup truck he was driving, Rebolledo said in a news release.
Police were first called at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday to a shooting in the 4400 block of South Broadway, which is just south of where I-235 and I-135 meet. Police found the 28-year-old victim at a business in the 4900 block of South Broadway. He had a gunshot wound to his right lower leg.
He was taken to the hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Police learned the victim was driving his moped southbound in the 4400 block of South Broadway and Murphy was driving a blue pickup truck when an argument occurred, Rebolledo said.
“During the verbal argument, Murphy produced a handgun and fired multiple shots at the victim, striking him once in the right lower leg,” Rebolledo said.
Police are asking anyone with information about the shooting to call detectives at 316-268-4407, the See Something Say Something hotline at 316-519-2282 or Crime Stoppers at 316-267-2111. Callers can remain anonymous with Crime Stoppers.
Murphy is on parole after serving time in prison for a 2020 incident in which he was sentenced for aggravated burglary, criminal possession of a non-firearm weapon by a felon and a drug charge, KDOC records show.
