Police say a 70-year-old pedestrian died after she was struck by a car Sunday while walking across an east Wichita street.

Nancy McDonough-Harmening of Wichita was crossing at the intersection of Douglas and Roosevelt when she was hit by a white Mercury Grand Marquis traveling west on Douglas, Wichita police said in a news release. The driver, 22-year-old Jecarlos Kemp of Wichita, did not stop after hitting her, police said.

“Multiple people witnessed the accident and rendered aid to the victim,” the release said.

When officers arrived, McDonough-Harmening was lying in the street “unresponsive and being cared for by good Samaritans.” She later was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

The crash happened around 5:25 p.m. Sunday.

“Kemp returned to the scene approximately 20 minutes after the incident and was arrested” on suspicion of one count of committing a felony hit-and-run, the release says.

As of Monday, Kemp had not been formally charged.

The crash is the city’s 16th fatal collision of the year. There have been 16 people killed, Wichita police said.
