A 16-year-old girl, protecting her mother, stabbed her stepfather with a knife Tuesday morning in north Wichita, police said Wednesday.

Around 8:53 a.m., police were called to a stabbing in the 1700 block of North Emporia, which is near 17th and Broadway. The calling party, presumably the girl’s 32-year-old mother, said “her child’s father jumped her and their daughter stabbed him,” according to Sedgwick County emergency communications scanner traffic.

Police spokesperson Chad Ditch said the 29-year-old man is the girl’s stepfather.

The woman took the man to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis for non-life-threatening injuries.

The man was later arrested on a couple of counts of battery related to domestic violence and marijuana possession, records show. Ditch said police are not seeking charges against the girl at this time.
