Wichita police release suspect photos in ATM skimmers case
Wichita police on Tuesday asked residents to check their bank accounts for unexpected withdrawals as they try to get a handle on how many people may have been victimized recently by skimmers.
Fidelity Bank officials said Tuesday morning that skimmers were placed on ATMs at NewMarket Square and Bradley Fair.
It is the third incident involving skimmers in the past week at three different banks in Wichita. On Monday, police said they found evidence of skimmers at Intrust Bank ATMs, including at NewMarket Square and Bradley Fair.
Sgt. Santiago Hungria, head of the police department’s financial crimes section, said Tuesday police know of six scammers being used at ATMs belonging to three financial institutions: Fidelity, Intrust and Sunflower Bank.
“We believe the skimmers have already left the area,” Hungria said.
Wichita police are comparing notes with authorities in the region, he said.
“We do believe that the incidents here are related to ones in Salina and possibly in the Kansas City area as well,” Hungria said. “We believe they are a group of individuals who are traveling and moving through the Midwest.”
Authorities released images of three suspects gleaned from security cameras at ATMs on Tuesday afternoon. The police advised people to call Financial Crimes at 316-268-4193 if they had information about the suspects.
A news release from Fidelity Bank said the skimmers were placed on ATMs at 2251 N. Maize and 2111 N. Bradley Fair Parkway on July 4. They were installed early in the morning and removed later that day, the release said.
The bank said it has notified account holders affected by the incident, who are not liable for any unauthorized transaction. The bank said customers who used these ATMs on July 4 should monitor their accounts and contact the bank with any concerns.
The release said bank officials are working with the financial crimes department at the Wichita Police Department.
