A parole absconder who crashed during a weekend car chase with deputies, killing his passenger, has been charged with second-degree reckless murder, fleeing or attempting to elude law enforcement and driving with a suspended license.

Harry J. Rediker, 22, of Wichita, made a first appearance in Sedgwick County District Court on Wednesday afternoon in connection with the pursuit and Saturday death of 38-year-old Lindsey Garmon of Wellington. A judge set Rediker’s bond at $250,000 and ordered he return to court for another hearing on Feb. 13, records show.

Garmon died at a Wichita hospital about three hours after Rediker “left the roadway” at Hoover and Taft, hit a curb and slammed his Hyundai Elantra into a utility pole, according to the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office. The crash happened around 5:22 a.m., less than a minute after deputies started chasing Rediker when he refused to pull over for alleged traffic infractions in the 5700 block of West Kellogg Drive, near Kellogg and Hoover in west Wichita, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Sheriff’s Lt Nathan Gibbs said Monday that the exact cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Rediker, who is being held in the Sedgwick County Jail, was paroled to Sedgwick County in late December but absconded within 10 days, according to online Kansas Department of Corrections records. He was booked into jail on Saturday afternoon.
