They were sons and daughters, moms and dads, sisters, brothers and friends, ranging in age from 13 months to 59 years. The 35 people killed in Wichita homicides last year had lives that extended well beyond the news of their deaths. Here is a glimpse into who they were.

Stalkup, 44, liked to joke around and took April Fool’s Day very seriously, according to his obituary. “He always kept us laughing,” a family member wrote on his tribute page. Stalkup was stabbed at a north Wichita apartment complex.

A scroll through 22-year-old Camarillo’s Facebook page shows that he was into sports, particularly professional basketball. Camarillo was shot by someone in another car while driving in northeast Wichita.
Justine Bell

Justine Bell, 39, was a woman with a beautiful smile, according to a comment left on her obituary. She also was a mom. Her teenage son posted on her Facebook page, “I love you forever.” Bell was struck by gunfire and run over by a vehicle at a party in north Wichita.

Cervantes-Martinez, 17, was a junior at Southeast High School, according to a GoFundMe post. A bright, loving young man, he was a son, brother, nephew and uncle, the GoFundMe said. Cervantes-Martinez was one of two people shot and killed at an apartment complex in south Wichita.

Zamora, 16, was a daughter, a sister and a sophomore at Southeast High School, a GoFundMe post said. Friends and family say she was beautiful and fun to be around. She was shot and killed at an apartment complex in south Wichita.

Galloway, 38, was a mother of three who had an infectious smile and loved taking photos, her sister said. She was very outgoing and would make friends wherever she went. Galloway was one of two people found shot at a home in south Wichita.

O’ Callaghan, 30, found happiness in the outdoors, particularly hunting, fishing, paint balling and snowboarding, his obituary said. He was known for his humorous and caring personality. O’Callaghan was found shot to death at a south Wichita home.

The 21-year-old was a “cool person and very caring and loving guy,” one person wrote on his online obituary. Williams was one of two people who died in a shooting that resulted in a car crash near Lincoln and George Washington Boulevard.

Montgomery, 20, also known as “Lil Zo,” never “missed the opportunity to crack a joke and make you smile,” according to his obituary. He loved sports, sneakers and spending time with family and friends. Montgomery was one of two people killed during a shooting that resulted in a car crash near Lincoln and George Washington Boulevard.

Barnes, 30, was a father of two girls and aspired to be a musician. He bought his first guitar and learned the basics from his father, his obituary said. Barnes was beaten to death on the Seneca Street Bridge.

Marni (Wessling) Shrum, 59, was a loving and kind person with a strong will and an infectious laugh and smile, her son told an Eagle reporter. She was shot and killed by her husband in an apparent murder/suicide in an RV in west Wichita, police said.

Njoroge, 21, was a “happy-go-lucky person with no care in the world,” his uncle said. He enjoyed listening to rap music and wrote some raps of his own. He lived in Wichita with his grandma and worked in a clothing store. Njoroge died after being shot at an apartment complex in downtown Wichita.

Hutton, 14, was a social butterfly who loved being the center of attention, his sister said. A former teacher described him as a “light in the classroom” for being able to make people laugh and smile. Hutton was shot and killed after a dispute inside Towne East Square mall.

The 31-year-old was found shot multiple times in front of a home in southeast Wichita. Police said he and another man argued over a relationship with a woman.

Bowen, 31, was an active father who enjoyed working out. “He was a pretty fit guy,” his mother said. He worked as a cook at Carrington at Cherry Creek nursing home and had plans to start his own car detailing business. Bowen was found with multiple gunshot wounds outside a night club on north Hydraulic.

White, 25, loved being outdoors camping, fishing and skateboarding, his obituary said. When not outdoors, he could be found assembling gaming computers from parts. White died after being shot in front of a home in south Wichita.

Hutton, 16, was a son and brother known for his sense of humor, dance moves and big smile, according to comments left on his obituary. His Facebook page showed that he enjoyed spending time with his friends. Hutton died after being shot outside an apartment complex near downtown Wichita.

Banuelos, 39, was known for his devotion to his four kids. One of his boys was named after him, and he was close to all of them, his mother said. Banuelos also enjoyed fishing, camping and traveling with his family. He was shot and killed outside a west Wichita home by law enforcement officers.

Family meant everything to Hardy, 30, who moved into the east Wichita apartment complex where his mom lived a month before he was shot after an argument at the complex. “He never liked the idea of us living too far away from him,” his mother said. “He always felt like he had to protect us.” He was the father of a young girl.

Barefield, 17, was a multi-sport athlete who had just graduated from high school and moved to Wichita from Topeka with his family. His mother said he planned to get his commercial driver’s license to become a truck driver. Barefield was shot and killed while attending a graduation party in northeast Wichita. He had lived in Wichita for 16 days.

People who saw 14-year-old Reed always noticed his “million dollar smile,” his obituary said. Reed was also known for putting in “hundreds of hours of study” and even studied overnight sometimes. Reed died after being shot at a southeast Wichita home.

Israel Luna-Vick was a month shy of turning 2 when he died. A slideshow video on his obituary shows him being held by his parents, having his face painted as a tiger and attending events with his family. Wichita police say he died from an apparent drug overdose.

Friends and family of Johnson, 22, said they have fond memories of watching him play football. Artwork with his online obituary showed a football and helmet. “You were a joy to coach,” said one person who left condolences on the obituary. Johnson died after a shooting at a northwest Wichita Dillons.

Lucca Lien was a 13-month-old toddler with red hair. His obituary said he learned to walk quickly and loved exploring everything he could reach. He was found unresponsive at a south Wichita motel; police said he had been exposed to fentanyl.

The 20-month-old had spent time with his father and his father’s girlfriend before being returned to a family member who was his legal guardian. A short time later, the guardian realized he was unresponsive. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy showed he had extensive injuries.

A look at 22-year-old Greenley’s Facebook profile showed that he was often surrounded by his friends and family. He was shot and killed in Old Town.

Haynes, 49, was the oldest child and was known as the backbone of his family, his sister said. He owned a lawn care company and was planning to see his sister days before he died. Haynes was shot and killed in a southeast Wichita home.

Bills, 21, was a husband and father, according to his obituary. His Facebook page showed photos of him spending time with his two kids. Several people were outside of a south Wichita mobile home when he was shot during an argument.

McDowel-Mitchell, 18, was the oldest of four and loved to play football and basketball as a boy, his obituary said. He also was passionate about music. He played the tuba and was a member of the Wichita East High School marching band. McDowel-Mitchell was shot after an argument broke out at a southeast Wichita apartment complex.

Coleman, 35, was a husband and father. He was known to be a jokester and was always happy and smiling, his wife said. He worked as a material technician at Spirit Aerosystems and during his free time enjoyed learning about cars. Coleman was shot and killed after an argument at a Wendy’s in east Wichita.

Boone, 41, was an avid San Francisco 49ers fan. He also “enjoyed re-purposing anything he could get his hands on,” his obituary said. Boone’s body was found in rural Sumner County after he was reported missing.

An online memorial said Allen, 22, was bubbly and energetic. Her nickname was “Nosh.” Allen was one of two people shot and killed inside an apartment in east Wichita.

Angela’s Cafe in East Wichita wrote on Facebook that 39-year-old Jose Alvarez , also known as Smiley, was a “kind man with a BIG heart. A good soul gone too soon.” Alvarez was shot and killed inside an apartment in east Wichita.
