Police identify woman who died after being hit by SUV in front of Robinson Middle School
A woman and her dog died after being hit by an SUV while crossing the street Wednesday in front of Robinson Middle School, police said.
Wichita police identified the victim as 83-year-old Elaine Edens. Police had previously given the wrong name and age.
The incident was reported around 11:50 a.m. at the intersection of Second Street and Oliver in front of Robinson Middle School. EMS and Wichita fire attempted life-saving measures on Edens, but she was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, police spokesman Juan Rebolledo said in a news release.
Edens was crossing Oliver at Second Street heading west when she was struck by a 2001 Chevrolet Suburban SUV heading north on Oliver. The driver of the SUV was an 82-year-old woman, Rebolledo said.
A witness told The Eagle that Edens was crossing the street with a dog.
Investigators are working to piece together the circumstances behind the crash.
This is the city’s 32nd fatal collision with the 35th death so far this year, police spokesperson Juan Rebolledo said, adding at this time last year there were 33 fatal collisions with 36 deaths. There were 43 fatal accidents with 47 fatalities for all of last year, police said.
