Man acquitted of murder in Wichita youth sports game shooting sentenced on weapons charge
The Texas man acquitted of murder in a fatal shooting during a youth football at Stryker Sports Complex will spend 18 months on probation for illegally possessing a gun the day of the slaying.
Jurors in August agreed that Maurice Antonio Hall, 28, shot 31-year-old Marquell “Marky” Nolen in self defense on Oct. 21, 2020, but convicted him at trial of one count of criminal possession of a weapon by a felon. He was sentenced on the weapons charge Wednesday by Sedgwick County District Judge Tyler Roush, court records show.
Wichita police have said Hall shot Nolen in the torso during a fight inside the entrance gate to the complex, 2999 N. Greenwich, during a little league game for 12-year-olds. Testimony from a hearing last year indicates the fight was over Hall’s apparent lack of involvement with his children, although Hall’s attorney has disputed that account, telling The Eagle in August that it’s unclear what precipitated the argument between old friends who had a falling out.
Hall fled after the shooting and was later arrested during a traffic stop. Nolen died at a Wichita hospital.
