Kansas deputy fatally shoots suspect, injures bystander during arrest warrant: official
A Kansas deputy fatally shot a man and injured a bystander Friday night at a rural home outside of Salina, Kansas Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Nicole Hamm said Saturday.
Dustin Vance, 42, of Hoisington, died at the scene. A 41-year-old Salina woman was also shot. She is in stable condition and expected to survive.
A couple of deputies with the Saline County Sheriff’s Office were serving an arrest warrant for Vance when the shooting occurred. Vance was wanted on a Barton County warrant for rape, aggravated criminal sodomy and contributing to a child’s misconduct, Hamm said in a news release.
The two deputies arrived at the home in the 2700 block of South Holmes Road.
“As deputies approached the residence, they were met by Vance who exited the house onto the porch,” Hamm said. “Vance was armed with a holstered handgun. Vance did not comply with several verbal commands given by the deputies, and drew his handgun. At around 10:20 p.m., one deputy fired multiple times and struck Vance.”
Two other adults were also at the home, including the woman who was shot.
She was in “close proximity to the porch and was struck by one of the rounds fired,” Hamm said.
Deputies provided first aid and she was taken to Salina Regional Health Center.
Hamm, in a phone interview, said she didn’t know the relationship between the suspect and the other people at the home or if Vance lived there.
The KBI was called to assist in the investigation. It is common for another agency to conduct an investigation in police shootings.
