Shootout with SWAT team ends with man being killed in west Wichita, police say
Update:
A person has died in a shootout with the SWAT team in west Wichita, according to Wichita police spokesperson Chad Ditch.
Ditch said the SWAT team went into a home in the 500 block of North Milstead around 10:30 a.m. and heard a single gunshot. It’s unclear if SWAT stayed in the home, but at some point later police got into a shootout with the suspect. Around 12:45 p.m., first responders could be heard saying officers had shot a suspect who was down in the garage, according to 911 emergency communications.
“An exchange of gunfire occurred with the suspect and the SWAT team, ultimately wounding the suspect, and he would be pronounced deceased on scene,” Ditch said.
Ditch said the Kansas Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting. It’s common to have an outside agency investigate officer-involved shootings.
Ditch said four people were home when police originally responded to a shooting around 1:30 a.m. in the 500 block of North Milstead. Officers saw a woman and a girl outside. They reported being shot at by the suspect, who was then seen by officers running in the house with a gun, Ditch said.
Two other people were inside, but exited during the standoff.
No other information was available.
