Police: Man arrested after threatening children, dog near 21st, Rock Road

A 53-year-old man was arrested after a confrontation during which he allegedly pointed a gun at five children playing with their dog in a backyard Monday night, police said.

Five children, ranging in age from 5 to 17, were playing with a dog in a fenced backyard at about 8:30 p.m. in the 2400 block of North Hathaway, Lt. Steve Kenney said. That’s near 21st and Rock Road.

Angry at the noise the dog was making, victims told police, a neighbor climbed up on a privacy fence and yelled “If you don’t shut up that dog, I’m going to shoot it!” Kenney said.

The man allegedly pointed a gun at the dog and at the children. A 33-year-old woman at the house took the children inside after that confrontation, Kenney said.

Police were called and officers booked the man into jail on suspicion of aggravated assault with a firearm.

There have been no previous neighborhood complaints about that dog to animal control, Kenney said. He did not know the dog’s breed.

“We will be out there today to chat” with people, Kenney said. “The man was upset because it was barking.”
