Two teens in custody after reported accidental shooting in north Wichita, police say
Two teens, ages 14 and 15, were in police custody after a reported accidental shooting in north Wichita that left a 63-year-old man with minor injuries, according to Wichita police Lt. Dale Mattern.
Mattern said the suspects and the victim are related, but didn’t know how. The initial report to police was that a son accidentally shot his father, who then called 911, according to 911 emergency communications scanner traffic.
The shooting was reported at 12:37 p.m. at a home in the 2800 block of North Holyoke, which is near Hillside.
The two teens were trying to leave when officers arrived, Mattern said, and one of them had a gun. Police recovered a revolver and a semi-automatic handgun, he said.
An officer on the scene walked out of the house with a brown paper bag that presumably carried one or both of the firearms.
Mattern said the victim reported lying in bed and hearing a gunshot. It went through a wall and hit a wood bedpost, with the wood debris apparently causing a “very minor scratch to the top of his head,” Mattern said.
He was checked out by EMS on scene, Mattern said.
Mattern didn’t know if the teens lived at the home or who owned the firearms. He said that was still being investigated. The teens, he said, would likely be booked on suspicion of a juvenile in possession of a weapon and obstructing police. One would likely also be booked on suspicion of discharging a firearm in the city, he said.
