Shootings that killed Larned family, including boy, was homicide-suicide, KBI says
Authorities now say a triple shooting that killed a family over the weekend in Larned was a case of double homicide-suicide.
Autopsies performed on Shala and Carver Smith confirmed they were both killed, according to a Monday news release from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation that provides additional details about Saturday’s slayings.
Jon Smith shot himself, the release says his autopsy determined.
The KBI said Monday that its investigation into the deaths showed that Jon Smith, 44, drove a pickup to 524 Park St. in Larned just after 3 a.m. on Saturday, went into the home with a shotgun and opened fire on his estranged wife and preteen son, killing both. He then turned the gun on himself, the release says.
All three were found dead around 9 p.m. on Saturday by a man who called 911 to alert authorities, the KBI said Sunday.
A GoFundMe account launched after the fatal shootings is raising money to pay for funerals for Shala and Carver Smith.
The account describes Shala, 44, as a “loving mother” and grandmother who “loved her family more than anything.”
Carver, 12, was a boy with a “fun and witty personality” who “cared so much for his family and friends,” the fundraising page says.
