Police have identified the man who was fatally shot while driving in northeast Wichita early Friday morning as 22-year-old Clemente Camarillo.

Captain Jason Stephens said at a police press conference Friday morning that officers were dispatched to a shooting incident at 13th and Oliver just before 2 a.m.

“When they arrived, they found an SUV that had crashed through a fence and ultimately into a garage and the back door of a residence on Harding,” Stephens said.

Police found an unnamed 25-year-old male passenger who was unharmed, and Camarillo, the driver, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

“He suffered one single gunshot wound and was pronounced at the scene. There were also multiple strikes to the vehicle as a result of gunfire, and multiple shell casings located in the middle of the street,” Stephens said.

Police think Camarillo lost control of the vehicle when he was shot and crashed the vehicle into the residence on Harding, where occupants were uninjured.

Stephens said police have determined that Camarillo and his passenger were driving eastbound on 13th when occupants of another vehicle, believed to be a blue sedan, opened fire on Camarillo’s vehicle.

Stephens said police do not believe the fatal shooting was a random incident.

“We do believe that it is possible that these vehicles had been encountering each other prior to the intersection of 13th and Oliver,” Stephens said.

“It appears to have been a targeted incident directed at the occupants of the SUV. However, I’m not prepared to comment on any of the further information that we’ve gathered because it is still very early in the investigation and we are trying to establish some of the motive and other facts of the case.”

Police are asking anyone with information about the shooting to contact Crime Stoppers at 316-267-2111.
