Man, 27, jailed in connection with fatal weekend stabbing in north Wichita

A 27-year-old man has been booked into the Sedgwick County Jail on suspicion of first-degree premeditated murder in connection with a fatal stabbing Sunday in north Wichita, police say.

Bryce Marc Johnston of Bel Aire was booked at 12:50 a.m. on Monday, online jail records show.

Wichita police say his arrest is tied to a deadly stabbing Sunday afternoon in the 2700 block of North Amidon that killed Jayson Stalkup, 44, of Wichita.

Police spokesman Officer Trevor Macy said by email the men “were involved in an altercation” at an apartment complex on Amidon when “Johnston fatally stabbed Stalkup.” He said the men are acquaintances but didn’t know what they fought about.

Officers found Stalkup dead in a parking lot when they arrived on scene around 5 p.m. He had suffered multiple stab wounds, Macy said.

Johnston was found at a traffic crash site a few blocks away, at 25th and Amidon, a short time later, Macy said. He was taken to a Wichita hospital for treatment of minor injuries then booked into the Sedgwick County Jail on suspicion of murder, according to police.

Johnston was being held in lieu of $500,000 bond on Monday afternoon, booking records show.

Authorities plan to present the findings of their investigation to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office, which will decide what formal criminal charges Johnston might face.
