A 20-year-old Coffeyville man has pleaded no contest to first-degree murder in the death of an Independence woman two years ago, according to Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt’s Office.

Kimberly D. Meeks, 19, was killed in a drive-by shooting around 6 p.m. on Dec. 14, 2019, as she was walking with a 19-year-old man at the intersection of Laurel and Main streets in Independence, in southeast Kansas, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation said previously. The shooter fired at them from a vehicle then fled the scene.

Authorities arrested Benjamin Job Mason II the next day at his Coffeyville home, the KBI has said.

Mason entered the plea Tuesday in Montgomery County District Court, Schmidt’s office said in a news release. He will be sentenced on Feb. 15.
