Police investigating death of woman found in house at 23rd and Green
Wichita police are investigating after a body was found in a house at 23rd and North Green, just east of Grove, on Thursday evening, Wichita police Lt. Dale Mattern said.
Police were called to the scene shortly after 6:30 p.m., and upon arrival, officers found a woman in her late 20s deceased inside the house. Officers are investigating it as a suspicious death, Mattern said.
“Our detectives are interviewing people right now, trying to figure out exactly what happened and our lab is processing the scene to do the same,” Mattern said. “Once we have more information, we’ll give a media release tomorrow morning.”
Onlookers in the neighborhood gathered around the intersection to watch the police work – three cars lined up one behind the other on 23rd Street.
A group of teenage boys sat underneath a basketball hoop in the street, their faces illuminated by the glow of their cellphones.
Police officers searched through a white sedan parked in the driveway of the chain-link-fenced yard with flashlights, briefly removing a black sack out of the backseat and rifling through it on the trunk before returning it to its spot in the car.
A man, who would give only his first name, Scotty, sat on a curb near the house.
Scotty, whom other people in the neighborhood referred to as “Chicago,” said he was friends with the woman who lived at the house, saying she had moved in within the past few years.
“She was my partner,” he said, adding that he would go over to her house to socialize and have drinks. “She was nice, talented, smart – she had a good head on her.”
Police have not identified the woman.
More information is expected at a 10 a.m. news briefing with police Friday.
