Wichita cops offer $1K reward for tip that nets arrest in 11-year-old girl’s shooting
Wichita police are offering a $1,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest of the person who shot an 11-year-old girl during a drive-by early Tuesday morning near 13th and Oliver.
The girl was lying in bed inside a house in the 1400 block of North Harding when the drive-by shooting happened around 12:30 a.m. Officers who responded to 911 calls about the gunfire found the wounded girl and bullet damage to the house. She was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of what police say are non-life-threatening injuries.
Wichita police Capt. Jason Stephens said Wednesday that authorities don’t think the shooting was random.
Four other people inside the house at the time were not hurt.
The shooter was still at large Wednesday afternoon. Police have posted a short security camera video of the suspected gunman’s vehicle on the department’s Facebook page, hoping it will help generate tips.
“Someone knows information on who is involved. We have one goal, and that is to hold the offender accountable, especially when it involves an innocent child victim,” Stephens said.
“But we need the community’s help.”
Authorities said Wednesday that 911 callers described hearing several gunshots and seeing a vehicle leaving the area. The vehicle reportedly drove north on Harding and then west toward Oliver, police said.
Anyone with information about the shooter or who recognizes the vehicle from the video is asked to call Wichita police detectives at 316-268-4407, Crime Stoppers at 316-267-2111 or the See Something, Say Something hotline at 316-519-2282.
