Shootout at west Wichita home that injured 2 stemmed from property dispute, cops say
A shootout at a west Wichita home stemming from what police say is an ongoing fight over property landed two men in the hospital Tuesday evening.
One of the men involved, a 36-year-old, was found inside of a home in the 2800 block of West Maple around 7:10 p.m. The other, 32, was hiding underneath a vehicle in an alley north of the address when police officers showed up.
Both had gunshot wounds and were hospitalized in critical condition, Wichita police spokesman Officer Charley Davidson said in a news release.
Police say the 32-year-old will be booked into the Sedgwick County Jail on suspicion of aggravated battery, aggravated burglary, criminal damage to property and being a felon in possession of a firearm after he is released from the hospital. His name was not released by authorities on Wednesday. At this point, it doesn’t appear the 36-year-old will face any charges.
Several other people were inside of the home when the shooting happened, but no one else was hurt, Davidson said.
Police say the 32-year-old broke into the home while the 36-year-old wasn’t there sometime before Tuesday’s shootout and vandalized a vehicle in the driveway before leaving. The 32-year-old returned with a handgun around 7 p.m., and forced his way inside the house again, police said.
When the 36-year-old saw the intruder, he retreated to a room and fetched a gun, Davidson said.
The 32-year-old followed and opened fire, striking the 36-year-old, police say. The 36-year-old shot back, which resulted in the 32-year-old’s wounds.
“The incident stemmed from an ongoing property dispute, and detectives recovered two handguns during the investigation,” Davidson said.
