Man shot in leg in drive-by shooting near I-135, 21st Street
A 33-year-old man was injured in a drive-by shooting Wednesday morning near I-135, authorities said.
The shooting occurred at 5:55 a.m. in the 2000 block of North Kansas, a Sedgwick County emergency dispatcher said. That’s just east of I-135 and just south of 21st Street.
A 32-year-old woman called 911 to report that her boyfriend had been shot, Lt. James Espinoza said at a media briefing at City Hall.
The victim was inside his house when about 10 shots were fired from the street, Sgt. Lenny Rose said at the scene of the shooting earlier in the morning. He was hit once in the leg and taken to Wesley Medical Center, where he underwent surgery.
“He’s going to be fine,” Rose said, adding that police were talking to witnesses in the neighborhood and to a woman on the scene.
Police also planned to talk to the victim.
“It appears to be a drive-by shooting, from the evidence that we’ve got,” Rose said.
The house was hit by several bullets, Espinoza said. No description of the suspect or suspects has been released.
“We believe this is in regards to an altercation the (victim) was involved with” on Tuesday afternoon, Espinoza said. The victim is not a gang member, and police are not sure what the dispute is about, he said.
The two-bedroom house sits on a street corner in a residential area of homes built shortly after World War II. The house has a large fenced backyard, where a small dog tethered to a pole paced relentlessly Wednesday.
A child’s toy sat near the dog in a sandy area, but Rose said only two people were in the house at the time of the shooting.
