Cowley County authorities are looking for a jail inmate who didn’t return from a court-ordered furlough.

Candise Renee Cross, 19, of Winfield, left the Cowley County Jail with her mother at 8:53 a.m. Thursday, headed to Rose Hill for a dentist appointment, but apparently fled during a bathroom stop on the drive back, the sheriff’s office said in a news release.

Don Read, sheriff of Cowley County, said Cross’s ride arrived back at the jail at about 1 p.m. But Cross couldn’t be found after the bathroom stop, her ride reported. It’s unknown in which direction she was headed.

Cross is described as white, 5 feet 3 inches tall and 135 pounds with reddish brown hair and blue eyes. She was last seen wearing a white tank top and blue jeans.

The sheriff’s office said she was serving time for failing to appear in two Cowley County court cases – one for interfering with law enforcement and the other for misdemeanor battery.

Anyone who sees Cross or knows of her whereabouts is asked to call the Cowley County Sheriff’s Office at 620-221-5444 or 620-441-4555. Tipsters also can call the local Crime Stoppers organization.
