Wichita police sergeant charged with battery of co-worker, police say

A Wichita police sergeant has been charged with misdemeanor battery stemming from an incident involving a co-worker during a training exercise, the Wichita Police Department said Wednesday.

“No physical injuries occurred,” the WPD said in a news release.

Maurice Mitchell was put on unpaid administrative leave on Tuesday, pending the outcome of criminal proceedings in Wichita Municipal Court and an internal review. The WPD said it received confirmation about the charges on Tuesday.

For transparency and to avoid any conflicts of interest, the Goddard Police Department is investigating the incident and an outside prosecutor reviewed the case, the WPD said.
