Boy, 4, in critical condition after accidentally shooting himself with dad’s gun

Wichita police say a 4-year-old boy is in critical condition after accidentally shooting himself with his father’s gun over the weekend.

Capt. Jason Stephens said the boy climbed on top of some items to reach the gun on a shelf. The boy was hit in the head when he “accidentally fired one shot and injured himself,” he said.

The gun was not in a safe nor were there other safety mechanisms engaged to prevent it from discharging, Stephens said.

The boy’s father immediately sought help from others nearby and someone called 911 to draw paramedics to the area. The boy is currently receiving treatment at a Wichita hospital.

The shooting happened Saturday night in the 2200 block of South Glendale, near Pawnee and Oliver. Stephens said the Police Department was still investigating the shooting Monday and will turn its findings over to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office, which will decide whether to pursue any criminal charges in the case.
