Distracted security officer hit man in Walmart parking lot, lied about it: police say

Wichita police say a 22-year-old providing private security at a south side Walmart was arrested after he hit a man who was on a sidewalk with his vehicle then refused to tell the truth about it.

Kathan Whisler of Wichita was arrested on suspicion of aggravated battery and obstruction of justice, police said in a news release. The crash was reported around 1 a.m. Monday at the Walmart at Pawnee and Broadway.

Police say after the wreck, Whisler wasn’t forthcoming about what really happened. But eventually officers learned that he “became distracted” while patrolling the parking lot and drove up onto a raised sidewalk, where he hit a 23-year-old man and a tree.

The 23-year-old was hospitalized with serious injuries but is expected to survive.

Police plan to present the case to prosecutors, who will decide whether Whisler will face criminal charges.

Whisler did not immediately respond Monday to a Facebook message seeking comment.
