Man stabbed while trying to break up disturbance at McDonald’s, Wichita police say

A man remains hospitalized in critical condition after trying to break up a disturbance between a man and woman in a McDonald’s parking lot and being stabbed multiple times, the Wichita Police Department said.

Vonn Christopher Campbell, 48, of Wichita was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

At around 9:50 p.m. Monday, police were called to Wesley Medical Center about a 23-year-old man who was taken there with stab wounds. The man who was stabbed and two others were in a vehicle passing the McDonald’s in the 400 block of South Broadway near Kellogg, police learned. The three saw a disturbance between Campbell and a 51-year-old woman in the parking lot, Officer Kevin Wheeler said in a news release.

The driver pulled into the parking lot and the 23-year-old got out and confronted Campbell.

“They became involved in a physical confrontation, at which point Campbell displayed a knife and stabbed the 23-year-old,” Wheeler said. “The driver then displayed a handgun to break-up the physical fight.”

Campbell and the woman left on foot, going south behind the McDonald’s, Wheeler said. The stabbing victim was taken to the hospital in a private vehicle.

On Wednesday, an off-duty Wichita detective working the case noticed Campbell and the woman near Kellogg and Market, about one-fifth of a mile from the McDonald’s. Police arrived and Campbell was arrested without incident, Wheeler said.
