At least seven people arrested during Wichita protests

New information about arrests has been reported by police. Those details can be found here.

Seven people were arrested on suspicion of rioting and unlawful assembly early Tuesday morning and late Tuesday night in areas where protests had happened, according to police records.

That number could increase, as the last arrest listed on Wednesday’s police report happened at around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday — with one demonstration continuing into early Wednesday morning.

Those arrested ranged in age from 18 to 29. Despite widespread claims that protesters have been bused in from out of state in protests around the country, five of the people arrested are from Wichita, one from Maize and one without a listed hometown.

Two of the men, who were the only ones arrested on suspected additional crimes, were both from Wichita and arrested at 1 a.m. and 1:03 a.m. Tuesday: one accused of possession of drugs and the other of firing a gun. Both were also arrested on suspicion of felony rioting.

The bulk of the seven arrests occurred Tuesday night.

Five people were arrested between 10:50 and 11:34 p.m. Tuesday on suspicion of remaining at an unlawful assembly, a misdemeanor. The arrests appear to be connected to the protest at 21st and Maize, according to police records.

An eighth arrest appears to be tied to the protests. A 25-year-old woman from Wichita was arrested on suspicion of a municipal or county violation, but her arresting description says “fail to disperse” after being arrested at 2:10 a.m. Tuesday near the QuikTrip at 21st and Arkansas.
