Wichita man arrested in El Paso in connection to 2018 shooting death

A 27-year-old Wichita man has been arrested in El Paso, Texas, in connection with the 2018 shooting death of Lucy Mojica, according to the Wichita Police Department.

Juan Carlos Caballeros-Yescas was arrested May 9 in El Paso and booked Tuesday into Sedgwick County Jail. He had a first appearance in court Wednesday and was charged with first-degree premeditated murder, aggravated burglary and three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, records show.

Caballeros-Yescas had been sought for the July 7, 2018, killing of Mojica, 41, who died after being shot shortly after noon at her home in the 500 block of West 17th Street, near Wichita North High School.

“The investigation revealed that Caballeros-Yescas and Mojica were in a dating relationship and that he arrived at her home, pulled out a handgun, and fired multiple times, striking her,” Officer Charley Davidson said in a news release. “Caballeros-Yescas then fled the scene.”

The complaint lists two people, including Mojica, as victims of the aggravated burglary. The aggravated assaults are said to have happened on July 8 and involve three other victims.

Caballeros-Yescas’ next court appearance is June 11. His bond is set at $500,000.
