Second man dies after drug deal gone bad in Wichita apartment complex parking lot
Wichita police say a second man has died following a drug deal that turned deadly last week.
Nineteen-year-old Jahbreel Rounds of Wichita was one of three people shot while he was at an apartment complex parking lot to carry out the drug sale Thursday evening. The other man killed is 21-year-old Earnest Jefferson of Wichita.
Police say Rounds and Jefferson were in a vehicle in the parking lot, near 13th and West, to meet Missy Barber, 20, and Preston Reynolds Jr., 18, for the deal. But a fight broke out at around 5 p.m., and Rounds and Jefferson were shot several times.
Jefferson died at the scene. Rounds died Monday at a Wichita hospital where he was taken for treatment, police said in a news release.
Reynolds was shot in the leg and survived.
Reynolds and Barber fled after the shooting but were later arrested. Prosecutors on Tuesday charged each with two counts of first-degree felony murder and one count of marijuana distribution, court records show. Each remains in the Sedgwick County Jail in lieu of $500,000 bond in the homicide case.
Wichita police spokesman Kevin Wheeler did not answer questions about what role everyone played in the deal or what drug was involved. Barber and Reynolds’ court-appointed lawyers did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment on the charges late Tuesday afternoon.
