Fourth Lansing prisoner dies from COVID-19

A fourth prisoner at Lansing Correctional Facility has died from the infection caused by the novel coronavirus.

The man, whose name was not released, tested positive for COVID-19 on April 29 and died Saturday, Kansas Department of Corrections spokeswoman Rebecca Witte said in an emailed news release. He was older than 60, had unspecified underlying medical conditions and was taken to a hospital for treatment of symptoms on May 1.

The man was serving time for aggravated robbery and first-degree murder and had been imprisoned since December 1989, the KDOC said in the release. His earliest possible release date was Oct. 1.

The prison in Lansing was reporting 761 positive COVID-19 cases in residents and 88 in staff members on Monday. Two staff members and four prisoners have died. The capacity at the all-male facility, located in Leavenworth County, is 2,432 residents.
