Third inmate from Kansas prison has died after testing positive for coronavirus
A third inmate from the Lansing Correctional Facility has died after contracting COVID-19, the state prison system announced.
According to a news release from the Kansas Department of Corrections, the inmate — a man over the age of 50 — had tested positive for coronavirus on Friday. He was taken to Providence Medical Center on Friday and died on Monday. No further information was released.
The number of cases at the Lansing facility has grown since the first few were reported March 31 and has become the site of one of the largest outbreaks in the state prison system. As of Monday, at least 380 inmates have tested positive for COVID-19, according to the KDOC website. KDOC said 289 inmates have been found to be asymptomatic.
In addition, at least 88 staff members have received positive tests.
Fifty-two inmates have since recovered from the disease and 21 staff members have returned to work. Two other inmates died last month.
