Drunk driver passing in no-passing zone killed Kansas man walking on highway shoulder

State troopers said that a driver was passing in a no passing zone when she crashed into a pedestrian during a nighttime deadly wreck in a southeast Kansas town. The driver was drunk and fled the scene before she was arrested, according to jail records.

Emergency crews were called at around 9:17 p.m. Wednesday to an injury accident on U.S. 59 in Labette County, the Kansas Highway Patrol said in a crash report. The wreck happened in Parsons city limits less than half a mile south of the junction with U.S. 400.

Investigators determined a woman was driving a 2007 Ford passenger car southbound on U.S. 59 near Larsen Boulevard as a man was walking southbound on the shoulder of the northbound side of the road. The woman drove over the center line and passed another vehicle in a no-passing zone, then drove partially off the roadway and onto the shoulder, where the car struck the pedestrian, troopers wrote in the crash report.

The pedestrian died at the scene. He was identified as William A. Treiber, 29, of St. Paul.

The driver was identified as Tiffany N. Jakee, 29, of Parsons. She had no apparent injuries. The report shows it was a hit-and-run crash.

Labette County Jail inmate records show sheriff’s deputies arrested Jakee on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter while driving under the influence, DUI with a blood alcohol concentration greater than 0.08 and failure to stop at the scene of an accident resulting in death. She remained jailed without a bond Thursday afternoon.
