Updated: Wichita police say early morning shooting death thought to be self-inflicted
Updated 12:53 p.m.: Police in an emailed news release said the 34-year-old man’s shooting death is thought to be the result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Officer Charley Davidson wrote in the release that police have learned through their investigation that the man was in the garage with a friend, who was showing off a handgun. The man “took the gun and fired one shot, striking himself,” Davidson wrote.
“The investigation is ongoing, and the Regional Forensic Science Center will do an autopsy.”
Original story: Wichita police are asking for public tips as they investigate the shooting death of a 34-year-old man inside of a garage early Monday morning.
“We don’t know that it’s a homicide at this time,” Officer Charley Davidson said during a 10 a.m. news briefing at Wichita City Hall.
Davidson said police got a call about the shooting at 5:10 a.m. Monday. When officers arrived at the home where it occurred, in the 2600 block of North Arkansas, they found the man dead from a gunshot wound to his body. The home is in a neighborhood northwest of 21st and Broadway.
Davidson said the man was at the home where a group of friends were holding a party when he and a friend went into the garage. The shot was fired there.
It wasn’t immediately clear what led up to the shooting, Davidson said.
“We’re trying to determine the exact circumstances of what did occur,” he said, adding that police were still talking to witness at the home Monday morning.
Davidson asked anyone with information about the shooting to call police detectives at 316-268-4407, Crime Stoppers at 316-267-2111 or the See Something, Say Something hotline at 316-519-2282.
